WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS 2.20.2009

Smackdown begun just as Raw this past Monday. Edge cuts an in-ring promo bragging about his Heavy weight Championship win…once again. Why am I not surprised? Edge declares that he took an opportunity. He is "a winner, not a loser". Jeff Hardy comes out to challenge Edge for the title. (I'm confused. Does that mean that his rivalry between his brother is over?) Jeff insults Edge by telling him that his wife wears the pants in the relationship. Oh Snap!

• Michelle McCool and Maryse DEFEAT Eve Torres and Maria.
  
  
  

  Notes: Damn! Poor Eve had three seconds in the ring before she was laid to be pinned.
  

Great promo between Miz and Morrison, the Bella Twins, and Carlito and Primo. I mean damn! Morrison's abs are made steel! Besides Morrison's abs…what is up with that get up? It is a funny thought that Morrison walks around showing off his abs like that…even in a fancy restaurant. It had a real purpose, since it does further their rivalry. The WWE hasn't had many good tag team rivalries recently. So, it's good to see these four (or six) of these people fighting amongst each other.

Plus, Miz and Morrison crack me up!

• R-Truth and MVP DEFEAT Shelton Benjamin and Chavo
  
  
  

  Notes: Shelton Benjamin and Chavo obviously don't understand the meaning of team work. Although, the upside it that MVP takes the win! It's nice to see MVP winning these days, but I do enjoy him most when he is a heel.

Before Jim Ross introduces Triple H for an interview, he shows a clip instead…a clip that goes on for like 5 minutes…well it went on for a long time. There was no reason for that clip to go back that far a few weeks. We know what happened a few weeks ago with Vince and Shane. No need to repeat. We get the point!

Great interview…but I have issues with this storyline. All of the sudden Stephanie and Triple H are married again. Ok, I know that they are married in real life. However, in the WWE Universe, they are divorced. Couldn't they have just made up a short explanation for their reunion. I'm just a little disappointed that they chose to disregard previous storylines to serve this one. Not that I'm not excited to see Triple H vs. Randy Orton again. I am.

  Notes: Umaga has gone back to fighting jobbers. I actually like that he is having these type of matches since it reaffirms how dangerous he is. God…I miss Armando Alejandro Estrada! He was a great manager.
  

When I see Vladimir Kozlov, I keep thinking Rocky IV. "I will break the Undertaker" sounds a lot like "I must break you."

• Jeff Hardy DEFEATS Edge due to disqualification.
  
  
  

  Notes: What an explosive match! Edge and Jeff Hardy are great story teller and they built up the match to a great climax with Matt Hardy interfering. So, I guess Matt and Jeff aren't done yet. I can't wait to see what happens in the end.
  

Overall, this was a great Smackdown episode. Obviously, I had some issues with the Triple H interview.

Poor Eve! Triple H does great promos, but this one left me shaking my head. Triple H was staring at Eve in the beginning of the interview. He made comments like "are they real?", "they're perfectly shaped and round", and "can I touch them?" which is supposed to lead us to believe he was referring to her breasts. Instead he held up her pearl necklace and went on about how fabulous they were. I guess this little interaction was supposed to have a comic effect, but it failed to bring laughs. I didn't see much of a point in it. Enter Kozlov who uttered in a heavily Russian accent "Goodbye King of the Kings." Every time I see him open his mouth, I keep thinking he'll say "I must break you!"

  Notes: Finally someone figured out that ringing the bell could work in their advantage. Morrison grabbed the bell and rang it, sending Festus to la la land. Miz hit the Drive By for the win.

  Notes: Great Match! 15 minutes in total, but very exciting.
  

  
  

  Jeff Hardy really overdoes his makeup! I used to think that the hair was too much, but now I think he really wants to get techni-color on us with the extra makeup.

  Notes: As JR reminded us, this was MVP's last match before Survivor Series and he had to win or return his signing bonus. It must suck to not only lose your signing bonus, but to lose to some guy names James Mason in under two minutes.
  

  
  

  Khali comes out and roams around like the giant that he is. He distracts MVP which allows James Mason to roll up on him and make a pin.

  Notes: A short four minute match.
  

  
  

  The highlight of that match is when Brie bitch slapped Natalya. I'm guessing they don't like each other. The Twins did a switcheroo and rolled up on Victoria for the three count…sooo is this going to be gimmick now?

The Undertaker gives the last rites for the Big Show:

Or should I saw Big Slow! With the casket in the middle of the ring, The Undertaker came out all dramatic and said that the Show's sins would be paid for. Big Show comes out with the Guerrero's at ringside. Show said he wasn't afraid of Taker talked about the power of his hand. Taker opened the casket and took a step towards them when all of the sudden the lights went off as the bell tolled. The lights came back on and Taker had Vickie by the throat which didn't stop her from screaming like a banshee.

Taker picked her up and placed her in the casket and closed it. I thought it was really funny when Chavo ordered Show in to save her. Show looked afraid and like didn't know what to do. Oh Big Slow! You're a wrestler right! You're supposed to run in and save her. Show threw Chavo in the ring. Taker beat on Chavo in the corner and Show jumped in the ring and saved Vickie. Taker Tombstoned Chavo and put him in the casket and closed the lid.

SMACKDOWN PREVIEW 10.10.08

Notes:
- Enjoyed seeing Jimmy Wang Yang this evening. He looks so cute with that cowboy hat doesn’t he (or is it just me….it’s just me okay).
- Brian Kendrick does a good promo before his match. What is with his leather jacket? Who know that our little boy was into bedazzling? Also, what’s with the Leopard print? I love you Brian, but please….get another jacket.
- Great to see the Stevie Richards on television again. Why is he being called Stevie? Didn’t used to be called Steven?
- It’s weird to see Domino in the ring with out Deuce.
- God, that Alicia Fox is a Ditz. All I have to say is that last week, Edge "promises" her (you never trust a man who says "I promise")that ever thing is going to be okay. Then he goes on t.v later that night to accuse her of being the aggressive one. Damn, this girl must not watch alot of television.

Smackdown Highlights:
The last segment of the show was the much hyped Cutting Edge with Mick Foley as the special guest. Edge was surrounded by tables, ladders, and chairs (Oh My!) which he said comforted him because these were his weapons of choice. The interview with Mick was wonderful. Edge talked about Mick’s Hell in the Cell match back in the day and how it messed him up for the rest of his life. Mick gave a great promo and basically told Edge to grow a pair (if you know what I mean). He asked Edge if he understood and then the fight broke out. Edge then attacked Foley and put him on a table. Edge then set up a ladder and jumped off it crashing down onto Foley and through the table whilst he was yelling “I understand.”

Punk Wins! Punk Wins! Punk Wins!

On the night of June 30th, I didn’t bother to watch Monday Night Raw. I was tired and I went to bed early. When I turned off the light, I assumed Raw would be any other and that maybe it wasn’t worth taking away some more hours of sleep. Call me an idiot! I should have known better considering what had happened on the previous Monday’s draft.

The draft shook things up and left Raw with a roster of new talent. J.R. was replaced by Michael Cole. Triple H left for Smackdown. Batista joined the Raw roster. The most important addition, in my opinion, was CM Punk. I see this young wrestler as the future of the WWE. I was glad to know that he would be moving away from ECW, but a little worried.

The yearly movement of what is known as the WWE draft has, in the past, left some young hopefuls high and dry. Take for London and Kendrick for example. I remember watching Smackdown as they were the tag team champions. I loved to watch them wrestle, because they had reminded me of the earlier days of the Attitude Era tag team glory (a la The Hardy’s and Edge and Christian). Obviously L&K are different, because they had their own flair. Once they moved to Raw, I swear I haven’t seen them since. Sadly enough, Carlito was caught in a similar situation. Carlito had a wonderful place in Smackdown where he carried on a very memorable rivalry with John Cena. Since moving to Raw, he hasn’t gotten much face time. Hell, I can’t even remember the last time he was in a big storyline.

I was hoping that CM Punk wouldn’t be caught in that predicament. Smackdown seemed like a better place for a young talent. Now Smackdown seems like a totally different show since they have pumped it up with a lot of star power. Thinking about it now, it’s a good thing that CM Punk didn’t move to Smackdown. He might have been drowned out by all the older and more popular talent on that show. He might have not been given that chance to shine.

Tuesday morning I woke up, took a shower and turned on the computer. I was in total shock when I found out that CM Punk had won the World Heavyweight Championship. I quickly tried to find clips online of Punk winning the WHC and played it over and over again. I wasn’t expecting him to cash in the Money in the Bank so soon by the way that the company had handled him. He hasn’t been in any kind of real solid storyline in recent months. Punk made small appearances on Smackdown and Raw since winning MITB. He had a short tag team run with Kane. However, CM Punk wasn’t utilized for his vocal promo talent. I would see short glimpses here and there. I enjoyed the banter he shared with Edge on one episode of Smackdown. Sadly, he has to follow a script. He isn’t allowed to rip as he did in the ROH days. If one searches for CM Punk on youtube, one is bound to find tons of CM Punk/ROH promos. Punk is a very talented man on the mic, especially when he is a heel. I think that CM Punk is at his best when he acts as a heel. He has a certain type of charisma and arrogance that oozes out of him when he speaks. He can make any crowd love to hate him. That is probably why CM Punk has a faithful following. Wrestling fans know what he is capable of and continue to cheer him on even though his natural talent is being held back.


CM Punk is now being presented as the underdog, which isn’t a bad thing. It bothers me a little, because I feel that the WWE is presenting their World Heavy Weight Champion as weak. The match against Batista at the Great American Bash was a decent match until Kane got involved at which it ended in a double disqualification. This past Raw ended the same way with JBL interfering in the round 2 Batista Championship match (which by the way was a good match). The fans weren’t interested in either match. There was hardly a pop, except for a few cheers and jeers at the beginning and ending. This feels very troubling to me. This should be a moment for CM Punk to shine.
For whatever reason, CM Punk isn’t being utilized to the fullest…at for now. I don’t know what the plans are for him. The WWE recognizes the talent of Punk, otherwise why would they give him the win for Money in the Bank. Maybe, all this is a set up for something bigger. At least this is what I am hoping. Maybe, they are putting a leash on him at moment and later letting him go to roar in further glory. I think a rematch with Batista when he can beat him 1…2…3…will be a good push for Punk. Who knows when that will happen?
I am a hopeful person. I’m glad that CM Punk is getting a lot of face time on Raw. People who weren’t familiar with him are getting to know him better. Once the WWE can let him be, the fans can finally see the true champion that CM Punk is.
